Sturtevant, St. Sebastian
Love One Another Capital Campaign 2021

St. Sebastian, Sturtevant

Our Parish Roots:

St. Sebastian Church was established in 1905 by Fr. Philip Dreis, weekly walking, riding a horse or taking the train from St. Louis Church in Caledonia. The first Masses were in Lingsweiller Hall on Sunday mornings with the smells of cigars and stale beer in the air. Sturtevant (Corliss at the time) was a railroad town and Fr. Dreis said, “All the trains stop at Corliss and there’s going to be a big cross to guide the way and beckon the people.” St. Sebastian was named in honor of Sebastian Messmer, the Archbishop of Milwaukee.

The first church was built in 1907 on highway 11 and 94th street at the cost of $4,000. In 1928 the Franciscan Assumption Province became the pastors of St. Sebastian because of their St. Bonaventure Seminary on the edge of the village and remained until 2007 when diocesan priests resumed oversight of the parish. In 1973 the current church was built for $450,000 on ten acres it owned on 95th street. The church was connected to the parish school, which was built in 1953 and has educated thousands of children.

Our Share

Through much prayer, planning, and conversation, we have identified our greatest needs and initiatives to strengthen our mission and vision for years to come. Our share of the funds raised will be used to address interior building repairs, create programs for new member recruitment and outreach for parents and families as well as provide funds to eliminate our outstanding pension debt.

  BUILDING REPAIRS - $131,632

We have been blessed with a beautiful church, rich with history, that helps us connect to God and one another through the sacred celebrations carried out within it. For us to continue to be faithful stewards of God’s gifts we will utilize the money from the Love One Another Campaign to address much needed capital improvement projects to our buildings and grounds. These projects include repairs to our flat roofs as well as replacement of the main furnace and air conditioner which serve our worship space and parish hall.

  DEBT REDUCTION - $16,454

The remainder of the funds raised through this endeavor will be used to eliminate our outstanding pension debt to the teachers’ pension fund. This will free up funds from further payments towards meaningful ministries.

  COMMUNITY OUTREACH - $16,454

In order to remain a bright, vibrant, and growing parish, we also need additional funding that goes beyond our operating expenses to financially support our ministries. This portion of the funds will be reserved for supporting important initiatives such as new member recruitment and programs designed for outreach to parents and families throughout our community.
